The other day, a very active member of tagvillage and one of our staff were talking about future possibilities. The topic of the conversation became a popular debate around our office. Essentially, the two were debating whether a group of major advertisers and publishers would be more valuable than a group of local advertisers and publishers as referrals. In the discussion, the two people compared a few different possible scenarios.
It is highly possible that major websites who cover topics such as running, cycling, exercise & fitness, hiking, sports, and other activities would publish advertisements targeting shoes and apparel designed for these sports and activities. It is also highly possible that major manufacturers and sellers of shoes and apparel for these sports and activities would promote their goods and services by targeting these publishers. In this scenario, major publishers and major businesses would be targeting the same sets of Tags.
The reality is that a group of major publishers and major advertisers in a related industry will all have a high interest in owning the Tags related to their respective market. Businesses such as Nike®, Adidas®, New Balance®, Reebock®, and Under Armour® could invest huge sums of money into the Tags they target. So could major publishers such as Runners World, ESPN, CyclingNews, or Sports Illustrated. These types of advertisers and publishers could drive certain Tags to 100,000 or 250,000 or even 1,000,000 Credits.
A member of tagvillage who had one of these major publishers or advertisers as a referral could earn some life changing commissions. If a major advertiser sold a Tag for 250,000 Credits it would mean a commission of $12,500 for the referrer. If they sold a Tag for 500,000 Credits it would be a commission of $25,000. The sale of a Tag for 1,000,000 Credits would produce a commission of $50,000 for the referrer.
The other side of the debate focused on local advertisers and publishers. There are many cities and regions of the world where local does not mean small or tiny. Cities such as New York, Dallas, Tokyo, Moscow, Seoul, Mexico City, Shanghai, and others have huge populations. Along with their huge populations, they have large 'local' publishers and advertisers.
The reality is that a group of 'local' advertisers and publishers in a related regional industry will all have a high interest in owning the Tags targeted by the members of their respective market. Imagine how many lawyers are in New York City. How many plumbers are in Los Angeles? How many restaurants are in Tokyo? How many cities and towns in the world have local television stations, radio stations, newspapers, or local magazines? Is it possible that each of these local stations, newspapers, and magazines have a website?
Publishers and advertisers who compete in a local marketplace will have a high interest in Tags that target their local marketplace. Just because they are local does not mean they will have small budgets to invest in Tags. It is highly possible local advertisers and publishers could drive certain Tags to 25,000 or 50,000 or even 100,000 Credits. However, what is more interesting to think about is the fact that there are exponentially MORE local publishers and advertisers than their are major national or international ones.
While major national or international publishers and advertisers could afford to invest millions of dollars into certain Tags, the number of businesses that operate as national or international suppliers is limited. In reality the businesses that operate as local suppliers could be hundreds or thousands of times more than the national or international ones. The national and international referrals will have very deep pockets and will target generic Tags like 'shoes' or 'dresses' because they can supply their products anywhere in the world. The local referrals will target local Tags like 'new york city attorney' or 'los angeles plumbing'.
As you can see, the debate is a good one. What is more valuable, local or major advertisers and publishers? On one hand, major referrals could trade Tags over 1,000,000 Credits. On the other hand, there will be more competitors involved in a local market and they will target greater numbers of Tags and change their Tags more frequently. Will the volume of local publishers and advertisers actually outweigh the price tags of the major publishers and advertisers? Or, will the deep pockets and ability of major publishers and advertisers to trade Tags over 1,000,000 Credits outweigh the volume of local publishers and advertisers?
Either way, we feel tagvillage members will forever appreciate ANY referrals they have that are advertisers or publishers, whether these referrals are local, national, or international. No matter how you look at it, advertisers and publishers will be the types of referrals that could literally change your life.
